Group Therapy Sessions

Group therapy sessions can help a number of different conditions and provide a supportive and encouraging environment for those who are seeking treatment.

They can make a great addition to individual therapy and patients often report that having other perspectives in therapy sessions can make a big difference to their journey.

What Does Group Therapy Consist Of?

Group therapy is when a small group of peers talk therapy amongst each other. All participants agree to confidentiality and do not share any information about any of the other participants outside of the group.

Groups can include cognitive behavioral groups, interpersonal groups, psychoeducation groups, and support groups.

What Kind of Conditions Can Group Therapy Help With?

Group therapy can be beneficial for the following conditions

  • Isolation

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Substance use disorders & addiction

  • Relationships issues

  • Divorce

  • School related issues

  • Mental health conditions

In addition to this, group therapy can also help with social, communication and emotional skills.

What Happens in a Group Therapy Session?

Group sessions are all held virtually, with all participants meeting online.

Typically, a group session starts with an introduction of other group members and then the group rules are explained. I then set out some expectations and goals for the group that are achievable and realistic. A group topic is also decided upon and we try our best to stay on topic throughout the session.

I have been hosting group therapy sessions since 1998 for various topics so I am very experienced with this. I also run monthly caregiver support groups for the Immune Deficiency Foundation.
